Avlar kero i no puedo. Mi korason sospira. Ven, veras i ven veras Ven, veras veremos El amor ke tenemos Tu i yo, ven, mos aunaremos. Luvya izo (i se mojo la kaye i el kortijo) Anda, dezilde al mi amor Ke es de los ojos mios. (translation): Trees cry for rain And mountains for the wind. And so my eyes weep For you, my dear sweetheart. Tell me what will become of me. I will die in a strange land. I see in front of me an angel Looking at me with your eyes. I want to speak but I cannot. My heart is sighing. Come and you will see, Come and you will see, we will see The love that we share Will unite us. Rain has fallen (soaking the street and courtyard) Go, tell my love That it is from my eyes.

(translation): This mountain ahead Lights up and burns There I lost my love I sit down and cry A jasmine tree I planted in my garden I took care of it and I grew it Now others are enjoying it I want to share my secrets The secrets of my life I want to use the sky as paper And the sea as ink The trees are pens In order to write my troubles Nobody knows of my pains Neither strangers nor relatives.

about

I share these songs with you like jewels collected on travels, gifted to me along with stories, or stumbled upon by chance and left for me to decipher. This collection is primarily of tunes from the Jews of Spain and the Balkans, traditional and original melodies with rich poetry in Judeo-Spanish (also known as Ladino). La Serena is a female being whose voice, according to Greek mythology, lures sailors to their death. This notion of the female voice as a means to destruction runs counter to my experience of this music, the cultural legacy from which it comes and, most importantly, of my own voice. How liberating it is to discover that the female voice can be many things: ferocious and wild, sensual and seductive, filled with grief, rage and joy, all with great potency and without destruction for anyone, most importantly the one letting the sound pour forth.
